Enhancing Soil Fertility and Crops through Biodynamics: Hands-on Workshop Series    Sat Aug 13 to Sat Oct 1, 2011, Thornhill, ON

CARRVILLE COMMUNITY GARDEN presents a series of 8 hands-on workshops:

Saturday August 13
10:00am–12:30pm
BIODYNAMIC BASICS(2.5 hrs)
Introduces biodynamic principles, methods and processes.

Saturday August 20
10:00am–1:00pm
THE WHAT AND HOW OF BP PREPS(3 hrs)
Preparations use a variety of mineral, plant, and animal substances to support and protect the garden by enhancing the bacterial, fungal, and mineral processes naturally occurring in organic growing. This workshop delves into preparations such as BD Preps 500 & 501, and compost preparations, while also exploring the role of atmospheric influences.

Saturday August 27
10:00am–3:00pm
BIODYNAMIC COMPOSTING(5 hrs)
Explores the biodynamic view of compost as a key component to building soil health and supporting the living matrix. Learn how to achieve this in your own garden!

Tuesday August 30
7:00pm–9:00pm
PLANTS 1: TYPES, CALENDARS & SEEDS(2 hrs)
Become familiar with the four plant types, their preferential needs, and how to use the biodynamic calendar. Begin looking at selective seed saving. Continued on September 17th.

Saturday September 10
11:00am–3:00pm
DOUBLE DIGGING (4 hrs)
Teaches the double-digging technique of creating raised beds and goes into the benefits of raised bed planting. Delves into bed shaping and how to maintain the beds.

Saturday September 17
11:00am–1:00pm
PLANTS 2: NEXT STEPS IN PLANTING (2 hrs)
Examines biodynamic views on companion planting, inter-planting, crop rotation, and cover-cropping. Also goes into sequential seeding, planting, and soil preparation.

Saturday September 24
11:00am–2:00pm
WORMS, PEAT, MULCH & MORE (3 hrs)
Investigate how you can incorporate vermiculture (worm composting) in your garden, using recycled tubs. Learn about peat moss substitutes, nutritive seedling propagation mixes, mulches and much more!

Saturday October 1
11:00am–1:00pm
USING TOOLS & CREATING DRAINAGE (2 hrs)
Become familiar with a variety of tools, their specific use and care. Discover the roles of drainage, aeration, tillage, and compaction.

FEES
$15.00 for each 2 or 2.5 hour workshop
$20.00 for each 3 hour workshop
$25.00 for each 4 or 5 hour workshop

No Charge for CCG Members – included as a benefit of annual membership! Membership information for 2012 will be available at all workshops.
