Why list with People & Planet?

Six great reasons to list:

Save time and money. Posting to the calendar takes only a moment, using our convenient form. There is no charge. We depend on donations, volunteer assistance and participation from the community.

Increase attendance and participation. Whether you're organizing a major event or a small one, listing with People & Planet can be a big help. With enough advance notice, we can reach over 100,000 people through our calendar, e-mail newsletter, print and broadcast media, and forwards to other lists.

Stimulate awareness and action. Listing with People & Planet increases awareness of your topic or issue, as well as your group and its activities. Our readers include a broad cross section of society, from students to community and business leaders. The information you include in your listing will be read by many. (You might want to include brief background information, useful links and resources, ideas for action – see what to post, below, for more ideas).

Get media and community attention. People & Planet readers include journalists, writers, politicians, teachers, nonprofit organizations, activists and business people. Even if they don't come to your event, they will read your listing. This increases awareness and can lead to unexpected opportunities.

Communicate with other groups. It is very likely that there are other groups or individuals interested in the same things you are and who would like to know about your work. Many of them subscribe to the People & Planet e-newsletter or visit our website.

Prevent date conflicts. If you use our web form, your listing will appear on our on-line calendar and will stay there until the date of the event (or until you notify us of cancellation or withdrawal). Other organizers look at this calendar when planning their events. By avoiding date conflicts, everyone benefits.

What to post?

Events and activitiesbig or small. Whether you're organizing a major event or a small one, we welcome you to post. This includes speakers, forums, workshops, conferences, public meetings, outdoors activities, courses, festivals, film & video screenings, broadcasts, volunteer days, workbees, potlucks and social events.

Themes. We want to hear about anything related to People & Planet themes or that you feel would be of interest to readers. The common element is environment, sustainability and related issues. If in doubt, go ahead and post it – we'll do our best to help spread the word.

Location. We welcome events from across Canada plus international events of interest to Canadians.

Fun stuff. Fun, positive, hands-on events are always welcome – as long as there is a genuine planet-friendly angle. Anything from potlucks to nature walks... volunteer days, workbees, green retreats, plantings, green getaways, discussions & debates, self-propelled outdoors activities, support groups, fundraisers, social activities and other creative ideas.

Recurring or ongoing events. Post these like any other event. In the body of the listing, indicate the dates and other details. For the date of the listing itself, use the next upcoming date, or for maximum coverage, use one that is several weeks or months out. For ongoing weekly meetings, you might want to post a reminder listing occasionally, for example at the beginning of each season. Just use the back button to post each of these – there's no need to reenter the other information. If you think the dates or locations might change, indicate in the listing that participants should RSVP or contact you to confirm.

Listings that empower and connect people. Many who read your listing will be interested in the topic, but may not be able to attend the event. So why limit yourself to describing only the event itself? It's a good idea to start with a few sentences of background and motivation, aimed at a fairly broad audience. It's also valuable to mention how people can participate or act on their own, even if they can't attend. Links can be very helpful. Most importantly, if there's a positive angle or at least room for hope, be clear about it! Where there's no hope, there's no motivation.

When to post?

Sooner is better. The sooner you let us know of your event or job posting, the better. It will go into our database – we will not forget it! The sooner you let us know, the further we can spread the word through our calendar, e-newsletter, forwards and print media partnerships. There is no need to resubmit as the date approaches, unless the information changes substantially.

Listings that are received well in advance are sent to several magazines and community newspapers for inclusion in their calendars (unless you specify otherwise). This can result in circulation of over 100,000. Deadlines vary, so please post as much in advance as possible. Some media require up to several months' advance notice.

Last-minute postings are also welcome. Your listing will appear on the calendar, usually in less than 24 hours.

How to revise or cancel a listing?

Calendar Listings: If there are major changes to an event – e.g. change in date, location or contact info; or major changes to the nature of the event – you are welcome to repost it. Post it like a new listing, using the submission form. Please indicate in the body and/or the private comments section the nature of the changes, so we know how to handle it. To cancel an event listing, let us know, and we will delete the listing as soon as possible.

GoodWork Listings: If you used the submission form (and created a password), you can modify or close the listing yourself. Go to the GoodWork Submissions page and click on "Revise a Listing" or "Close a Listing". Otherwise, send us a message including your contact information, and we will do it for you.
