When will my posting appear?

We will process your listing usually within an hour or less – or at least, within 24 hours Monday to Friday. It will appear online and be e-mailed out to subscribers.

For how long will my posting stay online?

It's up to you how long you want your posting to stay online. This can be anywhere from one day to six months, or until the position is filled (whichever comes first). By default, postings remain online until the specified application deadline or closing date. (But if you like, you can specify a separate "display until" date; please specify this in the submission form, under "comments to GoodWork Staff".) If you'd like the posting to be removed at any time, please contact us and we'll remove it immediately. Or use the Close a Listing form and enter the password you created when posting the listing.

How much does it cost?

GoodWork operates on a sliding-scale, pay-what-you-can basis. The submission form lets you choose from a range of amounts, including "can't pay". These rates are quite low – they help cover costs and ensure that we'll be here in the future.

If you can't pay, please post your listing anyway. We would rather have your posting and no payment, than no posting at all.

If you are able to pay, a link to an invoice will be displayed once you've posted your listing. If you so indicated, it will also be sent to you by e-mail. (Cheques should be payable to People and Planet, Box 21006, Ottawa ON, Canada K1S 5N1. We also accept online payment by VISA, MasterCard or Paypal.) Questions? Call (613) 744-3392 or other ways to contact us.

How can I revise or close my listing?

When you submitted your listing, did you define a password? If so, you can login and change your listing at any time. If you like, you can also "close" your posting – although this is rarely necessary, especially if you included an application deadline.

If you've forgotten your password and need to close or modify your listing, please contact us. We'll make the changes you indicate and/or assign you a password.

Tips for finding good candidates

Write a good description. Provide as much information as possible about the position, the work environment, your organization, your requirements and expectations for the role. Be clear about whether the skills and experience you mention are "required" or "desirable". Provide a link back to your website, so people can find out more about your organization. (More info: Writing a Job Description | Examples | Volunteer Management).

Be clear about timing & deadlines. If you'll be keeping applications and considering them all after a specific date, it's a good idea to specify an "application deadline" or "closing date". On the other hand, if you'll be reviewing applications as they arrive, you might want to word it differently. For example: "Please apply as soon as possible and not later than _____. We will be considering applications as they arrive." When choosing a deadline, remember that it might take a few days for people to see your posting, and a few more days to respond. So it's a good idea to allow a week or longer. However, if you can't wait, indicate "ASAP" or some similar wording.

Specify the location. If the work is to be performed in your workplace, mention at least the city or town, province and country. Consider also mentioning the neighbourhood, transit access, etc. If the work can be done from home, say so and be clear about where acceptable candidates could be located, e.g. your metropolitan area, region, province, or anywhere in Canada.

Include a "How to Apply" or "Contact" section. Please include towards the bottom of your listing a sentence or paragraph telling applicants how they should apply or contact you. How you want to word this depends on the situation, and is entirely up to you. If you're not sure how to word it, here is a simple but effective wording:

How to Apply

To apply, please e-mail your resume and a brief covering letter to ________ or mail it to ________ as soon as possible and not later than __________.

Be creative and responsible in your approach. Be open minded about things such as working from home, telecommuting, flex hours, job sharing, workweek reduction, etc. While these are not without trade-offs, they can result in a much better situation for the employer, the employee and the planet. Rethinking Work | Work & Labour Issues

Avoid overwhelm. Occasionally, employers receive more responses than they expect. It's easy to avoid being overwhelmed. Here's how: (1) Try to provide a reasonably clear job description, including specific requirements and location. (2) Include a separate section titled "How to Apply", that asks people to send their resume and cover letter. Specify the e-mail address, fax or postal address which you wish them to use. (3) Don't include your phone number, especially for general, entry-level positions. Consider specifying "No phone calls please." (4) Refer people to your website for general information on your organization. (5) Finish off with "We thank all applicants for their interest but only those selected for an interview will be contacted". (6) If you do receive too many applications, simply cut them off after you've received enough. Or do a quick "first cut" such as rejecting applicants that don't live nearby. You have no obligation to spend your evenings reading resumes!

Screen carefully. It's always a good idea to interview candidates carefully and check their references. Just because someone replied to a GoodWork posting does not guarantee their qualifications, motivation or honesty. While our subscribers do include many terrific individuals, we don't prescreen them for you.

International applicants. Because the internet is an international medium, you may receive a few replies from other countries. In many cases the simplest approach is to consider only applicants who are legally entitled to work in Canada. (If you do wish to consider foreign applicants, here are some resources on immigration, work permits, etc.: Immigration Links (2) (3) | Work Permits (2)).

Let your posting double as outreach. There will be many people reading your posting who won't end up getting the job – but who are interested in your organization and the issue at hand. Why not take advantage of this by mentioning how they can get involved in other ways? Consider including sections such as "Background" and "Other Ways to Get Involved".
