INTRODUCTION TO SOILS AND SOIL RESOURCES (24 HOURS)

In this course you will learn how soils in Canada are classified and named. Special emphasis will be given to soils of western Canada.

You will learn how climate, vegetation, and geology affect soil development. The relationship between soils and landscapes will be studied and you will become familiar with how soil maps are developed and how they are used for various purposes.

This course will also cover basic soil chemical, physical and biological properties and processes. You will learn what soil is made of, and why air and water are important components of soil.

Some of the topics you will learn about are: how soils hold 
and transmit water; how soils provide nutrients for plants and microorganisms; how salts affect soil properties, and how soils interact with other components in an ecosystem. The concepts covered in this course will give you a broad understanding of soil science and prepare you for more specialized soils and environmental sciences courses.
