Abstract
“Net Zero” ((Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB’s)) is the phrase that commonly refers to a building that produces at least as much renewable energy as it consumes. With the growing commitment by governments and manufacturers this goal can be achieved today. But what about tomorrow, and the ultimate goal of a truly sustainable world as it relates to building construction and use by its occupants?
The presentation "The House of Today - Net Zero" will explore how the common definition can be achieved today, and expand the definition of “net zero” sustainability to other concepts of building design and assemblies using a residential building under consideration for construction in the Sarnia-Lambton area.
Bio
David Lavender, B.Arch, OAA, LEED AP - David is a licensed architect in Michigan and Ontario with over 25 years experience with a wide variety of building types. He is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects and American Institute of Architects.
His academic career began with a Diploma in Architectural Technology and Board of Governors Medal for Academic and Leadership from St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology in 1977, followed by a Bachelor of Science – Architecture (cum laude) from Lawrence Institute of Technology in 1984, and currently concluding with a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Detroit in 1986. During these periods, he combined educational endeavours with employment activities in the machine tool industry and later the test and balance of HVAC systems. These experiences have led to a pragmatic approach to architectural design issues.
Since the Energy Crisis of the 1970’s, David has had a continuing interest in sustainable design which has resulted in becoming a LEED AP in 2006, and the design of a home with sustainable characteristics in the teeny, tiny town that time forgot, known as Sombra. His current interest is the design of a net zero house looking for a home in 2010. |
