A Workshop featuring former MP Lynn McDonald of JustEarth and Greenpeace Climate Coordinator Dave Martin.The workshop will provide background on climate change issues, as well as practical advice on lobbying your Member of Parliament. Lynn McDonald is a professor emerita of sociology at the University of Guelph. She is a former president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women and was the New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament for the Toronto riding of Broadview-Greenwood from 1982 to 1988. She served are environment critic for the NDP caucus and was on the founding board of Energy Probe. She is the founder of JustEarth, an environmental justice organization which encourages Canadians to make their opinions known to politicians.
In Parliament, Lynn championed women's equality and was also a notable opponent of smoking. She earned the enmity of the tobacco industry by moving a private member's bill to restrict smoking and ban tobacco advertising. Bill C-204, the Non-smokers' Health Act, was introduced by Lynn in 1986, and was eventually passed in 1988.
Dave Martin has 25 years of experience working in the Canadian non-profit sector on energy-related issues, including conservation, renewable technologies, nuclear power, nuclear weapons proliferation and climate change.
He has been a researcher, policy analyst and campaigner for several environmental groups. He has spoken widely on energy issues and has served as a consultant in various regulatory proceedings.
He was Research Director for the former Nuclear Awareness Project from 1996 to 2000, and was a policy advisor on energy issues for Sierra Club Canada from 2000 to 2004. Since July 2004, Dave has been Climate and Energy Coordinator for Greenpeace Canada. |
